People often ask me how I began my journey as an artist. The truth is, it feels less like a beginning and more like a homecoming.
As a little girl, I lived to paint and tell stories about anything and everything. My imagination was always on the page, and creating felt as natural as breathing. But as life often does, it led me down a different path. I built a wonderful 40-year career as a cosmetologist, a profession I truly loved and where I found great joy in making others feel beautiful.
Yet, during a particularly difficult time, I felt a deep need for guidance and peace. I turned to prayer, asking for help. It was then that I experienced a profound sense of calm, a feeling of being heard and held.
The next morning, I woke up with a clarity I hadn’t felt in years. It was as if a long-forgotten part of myself had been gently returned. I realized that the Lord had safely kept my childhood love for painting tucked away, like a precious gift in a box, knowing exactly when I would need it most. In that moment of prayer, He knew just what to do—He regifted that dream back to me.
Without a second thought, I went out and bought a canvas, brushes, and acrylic paint. I came home and painted my first ocean scenery. The connection was instant. The passion that had been dormant for decades was now wide awake.
I had never painted as an adult before that day, and now, I simply can’t stop. It feels like I’ve been reunited with an old friend, and I am so grateful for the journey that led me back to the canvas.
This journey has come full circle in the most beautiful way. Now, I have the privilege of sharing this gift with children. In their curiosity and creativity, everything makes sense. This work is more than painting; it is a form of storytelling. I create and write for the future generations, hoping to leave a legacy of color, faith, and the joy of a dream rediscovered.
My stories are born from the wonderfully funny and imaginative ideas that children share with me. These moments of spontaneous creativity are the heart of everything I write.
The process of bringing these stories to life is a true team effort. I am the sole author, but I am fortunate to have an amazing group of volunteers who support me in this journey. We fondly call our group “Our Book Club,” though I often joke that I am the only one writing the books!
Alongside my fantastic editors—Rosemary, Christine, and Adriana—Cynthia contributes her incredible talent for drawing animal faces. She has a remarkable ability to capture the personalities of the characters while reading the stories, adding a special dimension to our work. Together, we collaborate to polish each story, ensuring it is ready to be shared with young readers. It is a rewarding experience that I cherish deeply.
